5-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Climb via Marangu Route

Overview

Known as the “Coca-Cola” route, the Marangu Route is the oldest and most established route on Mount Kilimanjaro. This route offers hut accommodations and a more gradual ascent, making it a popular choice for climbers. The Marangu Route provides a relatively comfortable climb with diverse scenery.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival 

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. Meet your guide for a pre-climb briefing and gear check. Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 2: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

After breakfast, drive to Marangu Gate (1,870 meters) for registration. Begin the trek through the rainforest to Mandara Hut (2,720 meters), where you will have dinner and an overnight stay in huts. (Hiking time: 4-5 hours, Distance: 8 km)

Day 3: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Leave the rainforest and enter the heathland moorland zone, heading towards Horombo Hut (3,720 meters). Enjoy panoramic views and a change in vegetation. Dinner and overnight stay in huts. (Hiking time: 5-6 hours, Distance: 12 km)

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Continue the trek through the alpine desert zone to Kibo Hut (4,700 meters). This leg of the journey involves a steady climb with stunning views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Early dinner and rest before the summit attempt. (Hiking time: 6-7 hours, Distance: 10 km)

Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

Begin the midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters), the highest point in Africa. The climb is strenuous but rewarding with a breathtaking sunrise at the summit. After celebrating, descend to Horombo Hut for rest and overnight stay. (Hiking time: 8-10 hours to the summit, 6-8 hours descent, Distance: 22 km)

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Complete the descent back through the heathland moorland zone to Marangu Gate. Receive your summit certificate and transfer back to Moshi for a celebratory dinner and overnight stay at the hotel. (Hiking time: 5-6 hours, Distance: 20 km)

Day 7: Departure

Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure, concluding your Mount Kilimanjaro adventure.
