Overview

Arusha National Park, located just a short drive from Arusha town, covers approximately 552 square kilometers. This small but diverse park is known for its varied landscapes, including lush montane forests, the Momela Lakes, and the rugged Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest peak. Arusha National Park is easily accessible from Arusha (a 30-minute drive) or by flights to the nearby Arusha Airport from Zanzibar or other major cities in Tanzania.

Wildlife

Despite its size, Arusha National Park offers an impressive variety of wildlife. Visitors can see giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, and warthogs, as well as black-and-white colobus monkeys in the forested areas. The park is also home to a wide range of bird species, especially around the Momela Lakes, where flamingos and other waterbirds can be spotted. One of the unique attractions of Arusha National Park is the opportunity to go on walking safaris and canoeing trips, providing a different perspective on the park’s natural beauty.

When to visit

Arusha National Park can be visited year-round, but the best time for wildlife viewing is during the dry season (June to October), when animals are more easily spotted in the open areas and around the water sources. The wet season (November to May) offers lush green scenery and excellent bird watching, though the trails can be muddy and more challenging to navigate. For those interested in climbing Mount Meru, the dry season is the ideal time to undertake this adventure.
